WATER SERVICES

Several companies provide water to Shelby County.  To find the company that serves your address, contact the incorporated city you live in or near.  Other information is available by phoning the Birmingham Water Works at (205) 251-5634 or Shelby County Water Operations  at (205) 669-3869.

ADDRESSING

Shelby 9-1-1 assigns addresses in Shelby County except within the city limits of Alabaster, Birmingham, Columbiana, Hoover, and Pelham.  If you need a new address or are not sure of the correct address for your home or business, call the 9-1-1 office at (205) 439-6911.  General info about 9-1-1 can be found at   www.shelby911.org.

PROPERTY TAX

Property taxes are based on the fair market value of the property and the property tax rate.  The County Property Tax Assessments Office  establishes the property's market value to determine the property tax.  If you own and live on the property, you may file for a homestead exemption. SALES TAX

Sales tax throughout Shelby County ranges from 5 to 9 percent.  The total is made up of 4 percent state tax, 1 percent county tax, and in the incorporated areas, 1 to 4 percent city sales tax.  For more information contact the Shelby County Business Revenue Office  at (205) 669-3706.

LIBRARIES

Residents of Shelby County have access to a combined collection of some 200,000 resources, including books, magazines, cassettes, videos, puppets, equipment, maps, and pamphlets.  Library cards, free to Shelby County residents, are honored at all of the county’s library locations; Alabaster, Calera, Chelsea, Columbiana, Harpersville, Helena, Montevallo, North Shelby, Pelham, Vincent, Westover and Wilsonville.  The Harrison Regional Library, as part of the Library Network, has access to 29.2 million books in 18,168 libraries worldwide.

MIDDLE ALABAMA AREA ON AGING AGENCY (M4A)

Shelby County has activities for its senior adults age 60 and older.  Activities, programs and educational classes are presented by and for seniors.  Among the offerings are quilting, bingo, picnics, shopping trips, devotionals, exercise classes and fishing excursions.  Other services include home-delivered meals, legal assistance, ombudsman service, in-home companionship, postal alert, transportation service, and temporary assistance with household chores.

Among the programs is Pelham’s New Pioneers which offers activities such as speakers, one-day bus trips, and monthly bingo parties. For details on senior activities, call M4A at 1 (866) 570-2998.
