IMPORTANT:

  • Alterations of any kind on a title voids the assignment. Liquid paper or erasures voids the entire title and a replacement title must be issued.
  • Alterations on any notarized document voids that document.
  • If this transaction is being done by a Power Of Attorney or you wish to register your vehicle in the state of Alabama, we must have the vehicle owner's valid photo ID in it's original form.
  • Accepted forms of payment:  Cash, Visa, MasterCard, or local checks with a preprinted Alabama address accompanied with an Alabama drivers' license.
  • In order to complete your application for Alabama title the items listed on this page are required.  You are allowed 20 days to register a newly purchased vehicle without being subject to penalty of ($15.00 + Ad Valorem interest).  New residents of Alabama are allowed 30 days to title and register their vehicle without a penalty of ($15.00 + Ad Valorem interest).
  • Anyone possessing a valid ID issued by a governmental agency other than the Alabama Department of Public Safety will be required to show proof of insurance at the time of registration and renewal.

PURCHASING A NEW VEHICLE?

  • PURCHASING A VEHICLE WITH AN ALABAMA TITLE:
  • The Alabama title properly assigned to buyer.
  • Bill of Sale or gift affidavit (Any sale for less than $50.00 must be written as a "gift")
  • Valid Photo ID
  • If there are two owners and their names are joined by "and", both owners must be present to sign the title application or one has to send an original notarized Power of Attorney.  If their are two owners with no connecting word, it is considered "and".  If names are joined by "or", only one owner is needed to register the vehicle.  The owner(s) signing the title application must have a valid photo ID.
  • PURCHASING A VEHICLE WITH AN OUT OF STATE TITLE OR MSO (Manufacturer's Statement of Origin):
  • Title or MSO properly assigned to you
  • Bill of Sale or gift affidavit (Any sale for less than $50.00 must be written as a "gift")
  • Valid Photo ID
  • The vehicle must be present at our office for a VIN inspection or an Inspection form completed and signed by an Alabama Law Enforcement Officer
  • If there are two owners and their names are joined by "and", both owners must be present to sign the title application or one has to send an original notarized Power of Attorney.  If their are two owners with no connecting word, it is considered "and".  If names are joined by "or", only one owner is needed to register the vehicle.  The owner(s) signing the title application must have a valid photo ID.


MOVING TO ALABAMA FROM ANOTHER STATE?

  • IF YOU OWN YOUR VEHICLE:
  • Out of State title in your name
  • Proof of residency in Shelby County* (click here for info)
  • Current registration from the state your vehicle was last registered
  • Valid Photo ID
  • The vehicle must be present at our office for a VIN inspection or an Inspection form completed and signed by an Alabama Law Enforcement Officer
  • If there are two owners and their names are joined by "and", both owners must be present to sign the title application or one has to send an original notarized Power of Attorney.  If their are two owners with no connecting word, it is considered "and".  If names are joined by "or", only one owner is needed to register the vehicle.  The owner(s) signing the title application must have a valid photo ID.
  • IF YOUR VEHICLE IS FINANCED:
  • A faxed copy of the existing title from the lien holder. If the lien holder will include the owner’s phone number on the fax the License Office will contact the owner when the paperwork is received
  • Proof of residency in Shelby County* (click here for info)
  • Valid Photo ID
  • Loan account number with lien holder, lien holder's correct mailing address, and original lien date
  • Current registration from the state your vehicle was last registered
  • The vehicle must be present at our office for a VIN inspection or an Inspection form completed and signed by an Alabama Law Enforcement Officer
  • If there are two owners and their names are joined by "and", both owners must be present to sign the title application or one has to send an original notarized Power of Attorney.  If their are two owners with no connecting word, it is considered "and".  If names are joined by "or", only one owner is needed to register the vehicle.  The owner(s) signing the title application must have a valid photo ID.
  • IF YOUR VEHICLE IS LEASED:
  • Original title from the leasing company. If the leasing company will include lessee’s phone number with paperwork, we will notify lessee when the paperwork is received.
  • Original, notarized Power of Attorney from leasing company appointing the individual registering the vehicle
  • Proof of residency in Shelby County* (click here for info)
  • Valid Photo ID
  • Current registration from the state your vehicle was last registered
  • The vehicle must be present at our office for a VIN inspection or an Inspection form completed and signed by an Alabama Law Enforcement Officer
  • The person named in the POA signing the title application must have a Valid Photo ID.
 
TRANSFERRING OWNERSHIP OF A DECEASED OWNER?
  • ESTATES (OWNER OF VEHICLE IS DECEASED)
  • NO WILL - OR WILL THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE PROBATE
  • Original title
  • Copy of death certificate
  • MVT 5-6 (Next of Kin form) completed and notarized
  • One and the Same affidavit completed if name is different on death certificate and title
  • Bill of Sale (applicable only if the vehicle is being sold and not being titled to the next of kin) (Any sale for less that $50.00 must be written as "gift")
  • Valid Photo ID
  • PROBATED WILL
  • Original title properly signed by executor of the estate (name must be signed exactly as the name appears in the Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration)
  • Vehicles with an out of state title must be present for VIN inspection or an inspection form filled out and signed by an Alabama law enforcement officer
  • Letters of Testamentary or Letters of Administration naming the executor of the estate (we will accept a legible photocopy)
  • Bill of Sale (applicable only if the vehicle is being sold and not being titled to the next of kin) (Any sale for less that $50.00 must be written as "gift")
  • Valid Photo ID
     
IF YOU HAVE MOVED TO ANOTHER STATE OR COUNTY, SOLD A VEHICLE, HAD A VEHICLE STOLEN OR INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE YOUR VEHICLE WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS BY YOUR INSURANCE CARRIER, YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR A VOUCHER OR RECEIPT FOR CREDIT
  • VOUCHER / RECEIPT FOR CREDIT INFORMATION
  • If the owner of a vehicle provides our office with proof within 12 months of being sold, traded, stolen or deemed a total loss, the license office will apply any remaining credit to the registration of a replacement vehicle.  If the owner provides a valid registration for this vehicle from another county or state during this period then a check will be issued and mailed to the owner by the 20th of the following month.  Owner must furnish license office with current address to expedite delivery.  A $2.00 fee will apply to all vouchers / credits issued.
  • ACCEPTABLE PROOF FOR THE PREVIOUSLY OWNED VEHICLE
  • Bill of Sale with VIN, year, make, model, and date of transfer. (Must be signed by both seller and buyer)
  • For stolen vehicles a letter from the insurance company with VIN, year, make, model and date of transfer. (Must be signed by an officer of the insurance company)
  • Letter of Total Loss from the insurance company with VIN, year, make, model and date of transfer. (Must be signed by an officer of the insurance company)
  • Bill of Sale for a newly acquired vehicle that shows the trade of the previously owned vehicle with VIN, year, make, model and date of transfer.

Federal Heavy Highway Use Vehicle Tax Return

*ITEMS THAT CAN BE USED WHEN PROVING RESIDENCY:

  • An Alabama Income Tax Form for the most recent tax year (this is the best proof of residency)
  • Home property tax in the applicant's name showing the homestead exemption (owning the property is not enough, the owner must reside there or the vehicle must be kept there)
  • A current apartment lease in the applicant's name or listed as an occupant
  • A deposit on utilities in the applicant's name
  • A current utility bill for a Shelby County residence in the applicant's name (electric, gas, water, sewer, garbage, cable and landline telephone)
  • Military orders to this county (check the date)
  • School registration or Student ID
